Start with your companion’s habits. Compare size, placement and care before choosing a piece for your home.
For cats
Scratching, watching or hiding away?
Notice where your cat rests and how they scratch. A cat that scratches upright needs a steady surface tall enough for a full stretch. A floor scratcher may prefer a horizontal scratching pad. Place it near the spot your cat already uses.
Check the base dimensions, resting platform sizes and any weight limit. Follow the manufacturer’s assembly and anchoring instructions. Consider each cat’s needs in a multi-cat home.
For dogs
How does your dog like to sleep?
Curled up, on their side or stretched out? A bed needs to accommodate your dog’s natural sleeping positions. Compare the usable sleeping area, not just an S, M or L label. Bolstered sides can take up a lot of space inside a bed.
Choose a quiet spot away from walkways and draughts. Check the entry height and whether the bed fits where your dog likes to rest. Let your dog explore the new spot at their own pace.
Three checks with a tape measure
- Measure the space your pet uses when comfortably stretched out. Note the length and width in centimetres.
- Compare this with the internal sleeping dimensions. Outer dimensions describe the space furniture takes up at home, not the space available to your pet.
- Mark the outer dimensions on the floor with paper or a tape measure. Check doors, walkways and room for assembly.

Will it be easy to clean in everyday life?
Check whether the cover is removable, which parts can be washed and how to dry them. A machine-washable bed also needs to fit inside your washing machine. Always follow the product’s care instructions; materials and fillings need different treatment.
